Since I get asked this question a lot, I thought why not share what I know with those who have no idea where to begin. I’ve been in the Industry for 5 and a half years. I started when I was 9. My mom snapped some photos and began submitting them to local Agencies, We heard nothing. (It definitely didn’t happen overnight) and I didn’t get “discovered” in some glamorous way that you hear about on television. It wasn’t until 6 months later that we resubmitted and guess what? We heard from all but one of those Agencies. Crazy how this business works sometimes. ( I’ll list some reputable Agencies at the end of my post, for those of you in Southern California). If you live elsewhere, please feel free to contact me by signing up with your email or leave a message in the comments section and I’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.
First off, research is key and Google can most definitely be your friend. Now with that being said, Begin by submitting your images to Agencies online. DO NOT limit yourself to just one or two Agencies. Make sure you submit to as many as possible. The reason being, that just because you are not right for one Agency, does not mean you are not right for another. Every Agency is different.
Don’t spend money on professional photos
When you are submitting photos to an Agency, they don’t need expensive professional photos. They only need to see simple snapshots, with little to no makeup, because they want to see what you look like naturally and depending on your age of course. (Photos from your phone will be just fine) Most Agency websites will instruct you on the type of photos to submit. Usually a front facing close up, a full body and a side body photo will do but, as I stated before, Every Agency is different and may have different requirements. If you do get signed with an Agency then and only then will you invest in good quality professional photos by a reputable photographer. Most Agencies will give you a list of photographers they work with and prefer that you use.
Only work with Legitimate Modeling Agencies
Preferably SAG (screen actors guild) Affiliated
▪️Sometimes finding a legitimate Agency can be a daunting task. How do you know who you can trust and do they have your best interest in mind? My advice to you is when scouting the internet looking, make sure you find a SAG affiliated Agency. You can rest assure that they are on the up and up. You don’t need to go to some Modeling school to become a Model. Everyone has a different opinion on those but, here’s the deal, either you have what an Agency wants or you don’t. A “Modeling School” isn’t going to change that. Another thing I’d like to mention is a legitimate Agency isn’t going to chase you down in the Mall and tell you that you’re going to be famous. I mean seriously, don’t you notice how they approach everyone In site? There’s your red flag. You can thank me later and, My last piece of advice would be don’t give up. If this is something you truly want to do, then it’s always worth pursuing. If you don’t hear back for an interview/ Meeting within 2-3 weeks, resubmit in 6 months. Because this business is ever changing and just because you don’t have what they are looking for this time. that doesn’t mean you want have it 6 months from now. (Remember it took me a second time to get noticed) and with that being said, some Agencies get a few thousand submissions a week so, it’s not always possible to find what’s right in front of their eyes. Listed below are a few of the Reputable Southern California Agencies that I mentioned I would share with you and lots of luck if you decide this is for you. I hope I was able to give you enough insight and confidence to get started.
